CNPS WREATH MASTERS
EVENT PARTNER + PARTICIPANT
CALIFORNIA | DECEMBER 2021
Miridae was a proud partner and participant in the festive 2021 CNPS Wreath Masters Competition. The competition called for wreath designs made solely from California native plants, and Miridae submitted three wreaths with three very different concepts!
Redbud Redhumped Caterpillar Wreath
This wreath celebrates the plant-insect interaction between the Western Redbud and the Redhumped Caterpillar. As we observed and worked with redbud and caterpillar, it was a good reminder that the beauty of California native plants isn't just in their blooms and foliage but also in their relationships with other species, especially insects (even if it means defoliation!).
Full Circle Native Plant Wreath
This wreath reflects the build side of Miridae's work as a landscape design-build firm. The Deergrass seed stalks came from a client's garden that we installed several years ago, while the fresh leaves and blooms come from California native perennials and shrubs that were waiting to be planted at upcoming projects.
The Living Wreath
Unlike most wreaths that either get stored or immediately composted, this wreath is designed to go into your garden when the holidays pass. The burlap soil-filled ring was seeded and sewn with natural jute bindings to provide a place for a mix of native annual and perennial seeds to germinate. If all goes well, the Poppy, Lupine, and Yarrow seeds will flower in your garden from spring through summer.
