POLLINATOR PATHWAYS

FRont YARD
WINTERS, CA | 2020

The form of the design is inspired by the hedgerows and irrigation canals that structure the surrounding agricultural landscape of Winters, CA. The design brings the scale of these large infrastructural corridors down to the more intimate garden scale and repurposes them as corridors of movement.

The design concept is to 1) expand on the existing planting borders and transform them into productive and diverse hedgerows; 2) plant a pollinator garden; and 3) create an immersive path that moves through each of these spaces that connects to the greater 10+ acre property.

The hedgerows extend the existing plant borders, giving structure to the garden, and the diverse hedgerow plant palette provides habitat to birds and insects. The pollinator garden is composed of woody and herbaceous perennials and shrubs, with pops of color and texture against the hedgerow’s evergreen backdrop. The immersive path is inspired by the nearby irrigation canals that transect the agricultural fields. The path is a clean and defined line through wild and native planting beds. It modernizes the space, giving it a fresh look and feel, and it is aligns with key sight lines and connections, like the entry path to the house and the working barn.
